From the First Paragraphs of 'The Golden Egg' ~
"The sun was setting over the city of London in a golden glory, a little dimmed by the haze from the river. There was a freshness of spring in the air and the slender little maid, standing by the Thames, lifted her pale face joyously as the soft breezes fanned a tinge of color into her cheeks. She was neatly dressed, though her shoes were worn and her homespun dress patched, as well as her faded hood and cloak.
"Daydreaming, Winnie?" asked a boy's voice...
"The day after tomorrow, and on Easter Monday, the great egg rolling takes place...in Master Oglethorpe's grounds, and he is giving a big prize, Winnie. There is going to be hidden a golden egg, and they say it will be worth fifty guineas."
and the Teaser ~
"Where shall I hide it?" Randolph asked. "It must be well concealed,
for we shall have half of London out with such a prize as this."
