MONDAY READING: AUSTEN IN AUGUST PLUS.... 11.8.14

I luv this reading representation from Sayoor on flickr.
Says 'summer' to this reader!

I am feeling a bit negligent in blogging at the moment
and it's about to grow even more sporadic.
I've been accepted for a certification program
and will hopefully be heading to my course in 3 weeks!
Excitement and anticipation rolled into one...
So, while I'll definitely be reading, the topic will be changing
to course material.
Def great books ~ just maybe not all my anticipated Austen in August !

As there will be gaps in posting, I wanted you to know all is well,
just some changes in life's trajectory!

What Austen in August have I been reading to this point?
*

I read and loved Beth Patillo's, Mr Darcy Broke My Heart.
Jane Austen discovered during a summer seminar in Oxford and in the contemporary life of an American substitute attendee plus~
what would be the impact of discovering an unpublished Jane Austen manuscript...?
Fun story makes me want to read another in the set!

*
I made it through the considerable 343 pages of Val McDermid's
contemporized Northanger Abbey of the Austen Project.  Seemed a lot longer - more wordy- than the original and I had to fight to get through it.
Of course I loved the story being set in Scotland!

*
I followed my reading by watching the movie version of Northanger Abbey as written by Jane Austen which was a bit of a headspinning period contrast to the contemporary novel.
Totally enjoyed!

Northanger Abbey is a 2007 British television film adaptation of Jane Austen's gothic parody. It was directed by British television director Jon Jones and the screenplay was written by Andrew Davies.  -Wikipedia
 Initial releaseMarch 25, 2007
Running time120 minutes
                                    ScreenplayAndrew Davies

*
Austenland wouldn't play in either laptop or dvd player ~ sorry to have missed that opp, but I've ordered 2 versions of Mansfield Park
to celebrate it's 200th anniversary for Austen in August!
*

I've begun the audio of Longbourn by Jo Baker
and have to say I'm totally enjoying it!

Insights of below stairs thinking and well drawn imagery
are a fantastic addition to Jane Austen's world of
Pride and Prejudice.
Emma Fielding makes this audio exceedingly pleasurable!
Luving the British accents...
{I'll post a Tuesday Intro and Tuesday Teaser tomorrow}

So that's been my week .

This is Austen's first published novel, from 1851, which she wrote under the pseudonym "A Lady". The story is about Elinor and Marianne, two daughters of Mr. Dashwood by his second wife. They have a younger sister, Margaret, and an older half-brother named John. When their father dies, the family estate passes to John, and the Dashwood women are left in reduced circumstances.
The novel follows the Dashwood sisters to their new home, a cottage on a distant relative's property, where they experience both romance and heartbreak. The contrast between the sister's characters is eventually resolved as they each find love and lasting happiness. Through the events in the novel, Elinor and Marianne encounter the sense and sensibility of life and love.

MONDAY READING FOR AUSTEN IN AUGUST 3.8.14

and I'm fully enjoying my Austen in August book vacation
for this long weekend!

At least my 4th year of participating, it's one event I plan for in advance - book selections and squeezing in reading time!

Visiting 2 different libraries on Friday turned up new additions
to my already lonnng list , so we'll discover what books actually
get conquered.  Guaranteed I'll have pleasure in the process!

My anticipated first read got bumped when I discovered a new
contemporary version of NorthAnger Abbey - Book 2 of The Austen Project - available in the 1 week library express reads.
I'm already 2/3rds through.
Val McDermid writes of Cat Morland's invitation to Edinburgh's Book Festival,
modern equivalent of being seen by the ton at Bath in JA's original N.A.  Ms McDermid's done a credible job of
creating the gothic atmosphere and complementary characters to the original.  I'm enjoying the mockup!

*
My original reason for the library trip was to pick up the audio of Longbourn by Jo Baker

I'm anticipating a brilliant imaginative      story with this one!

Irresistible below-stairs answer to Pride and Prejudice: a story of the romance, intrigue, and drama among the servants of the Bennet household, a triumphant tale of defying society's expectations, and an illuminating glimpse of working-class lives in Regency England.

*
I also managed to snap up 2 dvds for this extra long weekend viewing of the Austen in August theme...
Northanger Abbey and Austenland !
Care to join me?  kettle corn awaits...
*
Final novel additions that changed my AinA list include:

and

For all the fans and followers of Jane Austen,
the month of August brings special delight.

Our reading selections take a determined turn in Jane's direction.
From Jane Austen's own writing to biographies about Jane,
and every genre claiming a Jane Austen connection in between.
In the Garden with Jane Austen

Jane Austen.

I have been collecting Jane's own novels for the past several months in preparation of immersing myself in Austen in August.

My current anticipations?

Dear Mr Knightley by Katherine Reay
Jane Austen's First Love by Syrie James
Accidentally Yours by Robin Helm
Dearest Cousin Jane by Jill Pitkeathley
Longbourn by Jo Baker
Murder in Abbot's Folly by Amy Myers
The Pursuit of Mary Bennet by Pamela Mingle
Austen Country: the life and times of Jane Austen [dvd]
The Real Jane Austen: A Life in Small Things by Paula Byrne
and hopefully, Jane's own, on its 200th anniversary year,
Mansfield Park.

My local library is well stocked with Jane titles,
so I have no fear of running out of options or selections.
Audios, ebooks or paperbacks - all waiting to fill my time!
*
How my reading/listening will shake out remains to be seen...

Have you decided to join Austen in August?
