SEPTEMBER 1866 WATCHFIELD HOUSE, OXFORDSHIRE, ENGLAND
A threading of voices spooled throughout the expansive chamber wherein we waited, voices so decently quiet as to be murmurs.  All present quickened as lightning pierced the ground just outside the wide panel of windows, like a finger pointing deep within the earth  Perhaps it was the good Lord's way of informing us exactly where the soul of the recently departed had found its final resting place. I did not believe Lord Lydney had ascended.

The opening sentence or two of my
book of choice?

"As my train pulled into London, I looked out at the early summer rain and was glad to see the dreary day had followed me from Hampshire.  It suited my mood." ~ An intriguing plot of WWI nurse, Bess Crawford, accompanying a convoy of soldiers from France to London.  

One of her patients is a young pilot who has been burned beyond recognition, and who clings to life and the photo of his wife that is pinned to his tunic.

Bess discovers a newspaper with a drawing of the woman's face on the front page. Accompanying the drawing is a plea from Scotland Yard seeking information from anyone who has seen her. For it appears that the woman was murdered on the very day Bess encountered her at the station.

My Thoughts? Having earlier read another in the series, my interest was piqued.  A library book sale offered up two hardcovers this week, so I'll begin this book 2 for  PARIS in JULY at Tamara's Thyme for Tea.
