"Armies of cedar and fir and hemlock marched up the foothills
of the Cascade Mountains, long limbs glowing with a peculiar shade of green I'd seen only once before:  when a six-carat emerald rolled across a stainless steel examination tray in the FBI's materials analysis lab.  That gem's green facets glowed with a hue so verdant, so luscious, it whispered sibilant promises in the ears of greedy men."

"You got the film?"
I lifted the box and we walked down the hall.
"A tall, scowling man stepped from the management offices..."You put that stuff down right now.""The warrant's signed by a federal judge," Jack said, trying to get past him. "Get out of my way." "What did you say to me?" The man stepped into Jack's path, baring his teeth.

It was one of those primal confrontations where you can hear the fuse getting lit, heading toward detonation.
I wasn't about to let Jack ruin this search."

REVIEW: BORN OF PERSUASION by Jessica Dotta and Amanda McKnight Narrator

BORN OF PERSUASION

by Jessica Dotta
read by Amanda McKnight

She never imagined securing her future
would require delving into the past.

London 1838, and seventeen-year-old Julia Elliston’s position has never been more fragile. Orphaned and unmarried in a time when women are legal property of their fathers, husbands, and guardians, she finds herself at the mercy of an anonymous guardian who plans to establish her as a servant in far-off Scotland.

With two months to devise a better plan, Julia’s first choice to marry her childhood sweetheart is denied. But when a titled dowager offers to introduce Julia into society, a realm of possibilities opens. However, treachery and deception are as much a part of Victorian society as titles and decorum, and Julia quickly discovers her present is deeply entangled with her mother’s mysterious past. Before she knows what’s happening, Julia finds herself a pawn in a deadly game between two of the country’s most powerful men. With no laws to protect her, she must unravel the secrets on her own. But sometimes
truth is elusive and knowledge is deadly. . .

Audiobook: BORN OF PERSUASION Unabridged 13.25 hrs

Genre: Historical, Fiction

Author: Jessica Dotta
Narrator: Amanda McKnight
Published: September 2013
Publisher: Oasis Audio

My Thoughts?
""Well, haven't you anything to say?" he finally demanded.
When had it ever mattered what I said?
My words were as empty as air.
No one consulted me about concealing mama's suicide, addressed the cost of the funeral, or even bothered to tell me,
that should my parents die,
I'd have a guardian.  No.  I would not speak.
I learned early that women did not escape their bonds..."
*
"I knew better than most how to maintain a frost around my heart."
*
Julia Elliston, daughter of famous athiest and published writer,
is shunned by society because of him and his memory, even when
her mother dies.  She removes herself from their home
to Am Meer, the country home of a lifetime family friend.
Julia intends to formalize her youthful betrothal to the neighbouring family's son, Edward Auburn, to avoid further interference from her unknown guardian.
But when Edward arrives to pay the family a call
- as a vicar -
 all Julia's hopes are dashed.
*
Julia's efforts to prevent servitude in Scotland
take serious turns for the worst and wilder consequences
than those she'd tried to prevent!
*
Un.be.lievably intense!
I was constantly setting it down to give my emotions a break
[blood pressure too!]
High suspense, imaginative, captivating intrigue ...
Excellent characterization with unexpected twists that send your head for a spin. Settings are descriptive, story unusual and innovative, I am all anticipation for more of Julia Elliston's adventures!
*
Taking the opportunity to review the audiobook of
Born of Persuasion proved its suitability for recording.
'Listening' added an entirely new dimension to the story.
Having already loved reading the story,
I was unprepared for the additional pleasure of hearing it read.
The chosen reader is above and beyond any I've previously
experienced in my reviewing.
Amanda McKnight adds more to the story than just the
opportunity to hear it on audio.
*
Her accent is perfection.  Personalizations of characters,
dialogue, and descriptions, all come to life at Amanda's reading.
What I particularly value is the depth of interest her reading brings.
To hear the story in the language and accents of the day;
Amanda's varying accents admirably differentiated the various
characters and genders - different stations of life -
and their colloquialisms.
[Her characterization of Julia's maid alone is worth hearing!]
All engage the listener at a deeper level than reading allows.
*
Ms McKnight's talents definitely increased the book's story value.
Text and narrator seamlessly complement each other.
Her voice age is perfect for the book's characters and content.
Listening to this audiobook proved a valuable
and much appreciated investment of time.
*
Oasis Audio's production is excellent.
No background interference to narration.
Clarity of sound and even tone for optimum listening pleasure.
Reading pace is easy to follow.
Production skill allows the plot to flow without interruption
and blatant edits.
Steady volume without fluctuations kept me listening
{rather than needing to adjust sound.}
Attention to technical detail enhanced the enjoyment of
Born of Persuasion.
Obviously this novel is ideally suited to an audio version
and I certainly appreciate the opportunity to have enjoyed the experience.

Audio Book Week Begins Today... 17.6.13

Having a tough decision about this week's book opps -
ReadaThing ends at 6 pm cst - a success for me in getting more books off the review stack.
Then Audio Book Week begins today as well.
It's actually going to begin for me now that I've completed ReadaThing at 6 pm...
*
Here's my 1st participation post and response to Devourer of Books
*
Today’s prompt:
Are you new to audiobooks in the last year? Have you been listening to them forever but discovered something new this year? Favorite titles? New times/places to listen? This is your chance to introduce yourself and your general listening experience.
*
I have listened to audio books seemingly forever, but new to being part of Audio Book Week.
So far my fave places to listen are longdistance driving in my car.
A new way for me to listen is via my kindle, which makes it even handier with the number
of books I now have available.
I love having a story read to me since a child, but I am pretty selective in audios according
to the narrator.  Luv a good voice and especially a British accent =)
Agatha Christie mysteries are always great for that!
*
Last summer I listened to most of Jane Austen's books on audio while travelling.
*
*
I have just won a brand new audio release of Sally Smith O'Rourke's
Yours Affectionately, Jane Austen
so will have to give that a listen during this week
[amongst others on the stack!]
*
*
Louis L'Amour audio books for my nephews [who love LL!]
I recently found 3 vintage Sherlock Holmes re-dos I'm anxious to listen to...
I get 2 free monthly audio books via Oasis Audio, with over 3500 titles to choose from
and Christian Audio, neither with any cost for membership or to join.
Great titles and definitely a valuable resource whenever you choose.
As are eChristian.com with many free books available
and booksshouldbefree.com - Free public domain audio books and ebooks
from librivox.com offering multiple genres.

*
The one I've been considering currently is on amazon.com for anyone who loves
Canadian author, LM Montgomery.
Almost the entire collection of her books on kindle for .99 !
*
I believe there are only 2 stories they weren't able to get permission for kindle.
Doesn't that look tempting?  Especially for this week and the new
Canadian Reading Challenge beginning July 1st !

*
Those are my thoughts for starters about me.
I do want to say various enthusiastic blog posts on audio books have encouraged me to pursue this avenue of reading and reviewing and it's been a great addition for this book luver!
Thanks!
