Armchair BEA Day 2 Discussion: Genre Fiction 29.5.13

Today’s genre focus is on genre fiction!

Genre fiction is kind of wide category. Genre fiction can take us to places we never imagine, experience scenarios we’ve always dreamed of and open up new worlds to explore.

If you’re a reader of genre fiction, do you have a favourite author or series?
What keeps bringing you back for more? If you don’t read one (or more) of these genres,
what is it that deters you from those sections of the bookstore?
I’m also curious to hear why you think these genres often don’t get the recognition they deserve.

~~~~~~~~~ * ~~~~~~~~~~
A couple genres I'm particularly fond of are mystery -
fave author being Agatha Christie
 newest discovery - Julianna Deering,
Sibella Giorello, Tenya Sharp Ingalls,
{Lorena McCourtney for cozies}
*
Jane Austen variations -
Shannon Winslow for one,
Karen Aminadra, PO Dixon {my Thursday Giveaway author!} Nancy Kelley,
Stephanie Barron, Carrie Bebris, Beth Patillo
and won't mention more as I don't want to miss anyone from my author 'Like' list !
*
historical fiction is another huge like -
Laurie Alice Eakes , Julie Klassen, Murray Pura, Elizabeth Camden, Rosslyn Elliott,
Sarah Ladd, Nancy Herriman
to introduce a few you might like to check into!
*
contemporary chic lit when I need lite reads to refresh
fave author being Victoria Connelly for one
Robin Jones Gunn and Rosamunde Pilcher
*
Why I don't read other genres of fiction?
I have only so much time to invest in reading so I've learned to be selective.
I want reading to remain a pleasure!
rather than a requirement
or an assignment !
*
Possibly why they don't get recognition might be personal prejudices.
But I really am not bothered by others' opinions.
If I have a great book on hand or on ereader, I'm a happy woman!
{no matter what someone else's opinion might say about that book} !
*
Wishing you all HapPy Reading moments as often as possible !!
It's Monday ~ I'm Reading Rachel Hauck's NEW Release 'The Wedding Dress'
Wedding_dress
The Wedding Dress by Rachel Hauck
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
a story that draws you in from the cover to the conclusion! pure loveliness...
contemporary and historical fiction fans and romance luvers, you will be pleased you made time in your reading schedule for this one ~
Four brides. One dress.
A tale of faith, redemption, and timeless love.
Charlotte owns a chic Birmingham bridal boutique. Dressing brides for their big day is her gift—and her passion. But with her own wedding day approaching, why can’t she find the perfect dress—or confidence to marry Tim?
Then Charlotte purchases a battered 100 year old  trunk at an estate sale.  The lock - welded shut to guard its contents?  To Charlotte's amazement, removing the lock reveals a wedding gown appearing to be brand-new, shimmering with pearls and satin, hand-stitched with gold and timeless in its design.  Whose was it?  Had it ever been worn? Who created it?  Who tucked the dog tags in the little sachet?  And what about the mysterious reappearing auctioneer in the purple vest who insists the dress has been “redeemed”?
Charlotte’s search for the gown’s history—and its new bride—begins as a distraction from her sputtering love life. But it takes on a life of its own as she comes to know the women who have worn the dress. Emily from 1912. Mary Grace from 1939. Hillary from 1968. Each with her own story of promise, pain, and destiny. And each with something unique to share. For woven within the threads of the beautiful hundred-year-old gown is the truth about Charlotte’s heritage, the power of courage and faith, and the beauty of finding true
love...
And to LINDA I wish you many HaPpY hours reading this excellent story...
The Guardian Duke
Jamie Carie's first Regency era release
in the Forgotten Castle Series
proved a fast and fun adventure tale of
twenty year old Lady Alexandria Featherstone
on the heels of her parents, treasure hunters of this bygone era,
who’ve been declared dead by the Prince Regent
but remain very much alive in our protagonist’s journey of the heart.
The good Duke of St Easton is despatched to take guardianship
over our young Lady, but her determination consistently outwits his efforts.
Their exploits of danger and disguise
create the tension desired to keep readers turning pages
to a surprising conclusion...
 The uniqueness of the storyline is what will carry you through to the last page of this novel.
And of course,
the romance of Ireland will be sure to captivate!!
Lush landscapes, picturesque castle of Killyleagh, Celtic music ~
all add their charm to the story’s setting.
Ann with an 'e'...
what fresh FuN!
when i discovered Renee Ann's
i am not a fiction reader,
but Renee Ann
offered an open book choice
with review to be published from Feb 25th to 28th
and my fancy was captured!
probably due to the large amount of work scheduled
and recognizing i needed some distraction ~
'lite'!
so here's my contribution to be added to the review mix ~
Lucy Maud Montgomery's
"Anne of Avonlea"
published first in 1909
reading this was like visiting an old friend!
the warmth and delight of discovering
impetuous red-haired Anne
as a child in "Anne of Green Gables"
now developed charmingly
through two years of her teen life
as her adventures are enlarged to include
the rural Prince Edward Island community of Avonlea...
" an August afternoon with blue hazes scarfing the harvest slopes, little winds whispering elfishly in the poplars and a dancing slendor of red poppies outflaming against the dark coppice of young firs in a corner of the cherry orchard was fitter for dreams than dead languages."
postponing her 17th birthday from the
vagaries of March in favour of a spring picnic with her friends,
the walk through vales and lanes spanning bridges and brooks
provides picturesque settings for their talk
that soon takes a 'heavenly' turn ~
"Minnie May asked me the other day if we would wear our best dresses
every day in heaven," laughed Diana.
"And didn't you tell her we would?" asked Anne.
"Mercy, no!  I told her we wouldn't be thinkng of dresses at all there."
"oh, I think we will ... a little," said Anne earnestly.
"There'll be plenty of time in all eternity for it without neglecting more important things.  I believe we'll all wear beautiful dresses...or I suppose raiment would be a more suitable way of speaking.
I shall want to wear pink for a few centuries at first...
it would take me that long to get tired of it,
I feel sure.
I do love pink so and I can never wear it in this world."
Anne's role as local school teacher providing
vivid depictions of student and parent personalities,
scrapes of all kinds and disciplinary reactions
had me rolling with laughter!
the unexpected arrival of 6 year old twins
into her life when their mother dies
introduces comedic routine on a daily basis.
"If I'm as good as good can be all day tomorrow
will you let me be just as bad as I like all the next day?" asked Davy.
little Davy's propensity for trouble
is matched only by Anne's own.
her wit and creativity
in responding to their predicaments
is unmatched!
beautifully descriptive
of rural life of another century
Anne books
offer great reading satisfaction~
especially in light of having lived in Anne's land
of Prince Edward Island
and experiencing first hand
L.M. Montgomery's
 accurate depictions of islanders 'thought'
regarding outsiders!
 lovely opportunities for numerous
mouthwatering tea and garden parties,
proponents of conflicting theologies
within the same households,
well developed characters
and plentiful humour,
kept me enjoyably occupied
to the final page.
the variety of love stories
included
would satisfy the
most romantically inclined reader amongst us!
"Gilbert wisely said nothing more;
but in his silence he read the history of the next four years
in the light of Anne's remembered blush..."
tissues at hand,
definitely recommended!
a delightful break in my routine,
i sincerely thank you Renee Ann
for offering up this book challenge!
and many thanks also to Sharon of
who created the GorGeous velvet bookmark
for her One World One Heart GiveAway ~
i can hardly wait to begin using it for my upcoming reading!
 i do hope a reader of this review
will take "Anne of Avonlea" as a selection of their own.
would you let us know your response if you do?
*THANK YOU to you who already have!!*
many thanks for sharing my enjoyment!
Miss Spenser has tea for us today
in the tradition Anne would approve!
feel free to stop in ~
