BOOK BEGINNINGS: STILL LIFE by LOUISE PENNY 27.5.16

~
STILL LIFE by Canadian author, Louise Penny
Publisher: Sphere / Hachette UK
1st published 2005
~
My
FRIDAY BOOK BEGINNINGS
feature for this final Friday of May!
The opening sentence or two of my book of choice?
~
" Miss Jane Neal met her maker in the early morning mist
of Thanksgiving Sunday.  It was pretty much a surprise all round.
Miss Neal's was not a natural death , unless you're of the belief everything happens as it's supposed to.  If so, for her seventy-six years Jane Neal had been walking toward this final moment when death met her in the brilliant maple woods on the verge of the village of Three Pines. "
~

Thoughts?

At last.  I have finally received the first in series of Chief Inspector Gamache. I was ready to go back to the beginnings with this novel.
And I became more connected to the residents of the
rural Quebec village in Canada as I joined in their
Thanksgiving celebrations, art show  preparations, and village life.
Moving on through the series will benefit from these
character introductions.  Looking forward to the storytelling...

I'm posting from STILL LIFE as above.

" This village was old, and you don't get to be old without knowing grief.  And loss. "

I've found these Book Beginnings and Book quotes to be avenues of introduction. Whether new finds or not,

BOOK BEGINNINGS: WRITING TO WAKE THE SOUL by KAREN HERING 20.5.16

FRIDAY'S  BOOK BEGINNINGS

This Week?
~
Publisher:  Atria Books / Simon Schuster
Published: November 2013
~
Following host Gilion's prompt at Rose City Reader,
here's the beginning to WRITING TO WAKE THE SOUL by Karen Hering
~

What
  Is the
                    Root of all these
     Words?
                   One thing: love.
                                    --Hafiz
"The human gift of language is born of the desire to connect, to share our experience with each other. Our words are bridges built between one person and the next while also crossing time, from the moment they are written down to the moment they are lifted from the page by a reader."

*
The end of the above sentence really captures my imagination,
as does the book's title.
I anticipate a great long weekend of reading
with this book a prime part.
Further to anyone with interest, an extended excerpt posted HERE
and a shorter post , interestingly, on Beginnings HERE

Karen Hering's back cover quote I find inspiring ~

"Begin writing whenever you are ready and
follow wherever it leads."

*

Have a great weekend!
and be sure to check out all the Friday Book Beginnings
HERE
You may just find another book to add to your shelves!

BOOK BEGINNINGS: BRIDE OF A DISTANT ISLE by SANDRA BYRD 12.5.16

FRIDAY BOOK BEGINNINGS

featuring today's choice

BRIDE OF A DISTANT ISLE
~
BRIDE OF A DISTANT ISLE
Daughters of Hampshire: Book 2
Author Sandra Byrd
Published by Howard Books/Simon&Schuster
Released March 2016
NEAR MILFORD ON SEA, HAMPSHIRE, ENGLAND
MAY 1851

I had no warning before evil befell me.
I'd forgotten how the sea around Highcliffe relentlessly pounds the land, undermining it so fiercely that the earth quickens, churns, and slips: the breakers smother all sound,
throwing off thickly salted mist that clouds vision like a cataract.  For this reason, I had no signal that someone was approaching.  Instead, I suddenly felt his breath curdling in my ear.
The whispering started...

~*~

Atmospheric, poetic writing, I anticipate exceptional reading
of this second historical novel of the Hampshire series.
Sandra Byrd is a word artist I particularly enjoy.
A dark beginning, I'm looking for undivided time to get into this story ...

~
I am so pleased with this new release of 2 days.

BOOK BEGINNINGS 29.4.16

BOOK BEGINNINGS
~
~

LAND OF SILENCE by Tessa Afshar
Published by Tyndale House
May 1st 2016 Release Date

~
When I think of the ruin my life has become,
the slow wrecking of my dreams, the destruction of every love,
I always return to the bee.  That one tiny sting, which robbed my place of favor in my father's heart and changed the course of my destiny.

~*~
This captivates me.  Poetic, colourful, and emotive writing in a foreign setting I want to immerse myself into.
I'm looking forward to reading more...

My Book Beginning?

From THE PROPHETESS :Deborah's Story
by Jill Eileen Smith

"When new gods were chosen,
then war was in the gates.
Deborah, poet, prophetess,
                   and judge in Israel"

Always fascinated with Deborah's role in historic accounts,
I was sure not to miss this new fictional account.
The book beginning sets the background
for what we know of the time in Israel's history.
Now what will I
come to know about Deborah as daughter, wife, and mother, along with public roles as poet,
prophetess, and judge ...
~*~
I look forward to finding more FRIDAY Book FINDS
