BOOK TOUR & GIVEAWAY: A PROMISE IN PIECES by Emily T WIERENGA 1.5.14

Welcome to Faith Hope & Cherrytea's stop on the book tour for talented Canadian author, Emily T Wierenga's debut novel
Quilts of Love #17
                                A PROMISE IN PIECES

After the end of World War II, Clara Kirkpatrick returns from the Women’s Army Corp to deliver a dying soldier’s last wishes: convey his love to his young widow, Mattie, with apologies for the missed life they had planned to share.
Struggling with her own post-war trauma, Clara thinks she’s not prepared to handle the grief of this broken family. Yet upon meeting Mattie, and receiving a baby quilt that will never cuddle the soldier’s baby, Clara vows to honor the sacrifices that family made.
Now a labor and delivery nurse in her rural hometown, Clara wraps each new babe in the gifted quilt and later stitches the child’s name into the cloth. As each new child is welcomed by the quilt, Clara begins to wonder whatever happened to Mattie—and if her own life would ever experience the love of a newborn. Little does she know that she will have the opportunity to re-gift the special quilt—years later, carrying even greater significance than when it was first bestowed.                          ~publisher

Here's Emily sharing her journey of writingA PROMISE IN PIECES
*
As Emily shares on her release of A PROMISE IN PIECES,
"
I’m not unlike Clara, the heroine of A Promise in Pieces, the reverend’s daughter and nurse who traveled across the waters to serve in a war her father didn’t believe in. Who came back, unmarried and lonely, promising to deliver a soldier’s letter to his wife and in turn, she received a quilt—one that would hold the babies she didn’t believe she would ever have, the husband she never thought would propose, the friend whose grace she never thought to find."

My Thoughts?
I absolutely loved getting to know Emily's writing voice and story.
It adds understanding to both her as author plus
perspective on background and characters.
It adds depth and richness to a poignant journey .
Questions during the opening scene of the story
were soon resolved and my heart was engaged before I expected.
Clara, an elderly woman, is travelling with husband, son and
grandson, on a family journey of some importance -
undisclosed 'til much later as her memoir unfolds.
The relational innuendos between the generations are beautiful,
setting the stage for the reminiscing to come.
Both car journey and life journey draw an ideal parallel
of distance covered and unexpected disruptions.
A story about a girl coming of age in a religiously strict home, daughter of a non-resistant minister and passive mother,
Clara paints with the colours of her adolescent brush.
Spirited and strong willed, she takes life in hand
and makes her decision to leave home based on her
understanding of her life to date.
True to life, that understanding proves far short of reality,
but we have an entire novel to experience Clara's journey to maturity. . .
The realism of this story captivated me on every level.
Conversations, character nuances, emotional engagement,
generational realities - all so authentically portrayed I
have a hard time describing its full personal impact.
The story itself is engaging at an unusual level.
Perhaps it's the true to life realities.
The journeys of so many lives exceptionally described.
Misunderstandings disclosed and the ahah moments
when truth and understanding are finally revealed.
Perhaps it's the beauty of Emily's writing gift.
Evocative descriptions of people I cared about.
Heart wrenching losses so deeply felt,
I sat reading midst heaps of soggy tissues!
And when the final moments draw the journey to its close?
We not only see the light of hope dawn once again
across Clara's horizon.
We feel it dawn within ourselves.

Dream Big ! It's Monday 5/27 What Am I Reading?

Joining with the rest of the  readers at Sheila's Book Journey
sharing this week's reads ~

continuing my reading along with Sheila
in prep for The Secret Garden Party on Thursday!
I'll be posting my review of the book & then partying with the others !!

also learning about prayer unlike what i've known before ~
much more relational than 'Help' i need a lifesaver !!
does an amazing job of relating what we currently do as 'prayer'
vs what God is actually wanting in the life situations we're struggling with~
and
the intended results of Growth and Change as we mature in our Faith...
"We can thank God first, in every situation, because every problem
we encounter comes with His provision attached to it.
God has a plan and a purpose for us;
He says that everything works together for those who love Him.
That promise is a deep well of provision for us.
Whatever calamity life throws at us, God can use it for our blessing and our benefit....

By entering His presence in the midst of our problem,
He can act on our behalf.
Our heart may be all over the place,
but there is a central place of truth where we gather -
in the goodness of God." ...

{"Gratitude is the bedrock of our life and worship"}

"We need to plan to enter God's presence with our thanksgiving
not our prayer...
Psalm 95.2
...once we've come into His presence,
we need to be still and listen to the heart of God."
~ Graham Cooke

Reading Group Guide
  1. Freya and Daniel live with the knowledge that there is more to the world than what most people understand. How does this knowledge affect each of them?

  2. "Black ops" officer Alex Simpson is committed to fighting the forces of evil. Do you believe that the presence of evil can physically manifest itself in the existence of malicious creatures? Do you believe, like Ecgbryt, that "there are places that are more enchanted than others"? Where and why?

  3. Despite his grim situation in life, Daniel feels as if he belongs to another time, to a greater purpose. Do you believe a person can choose his or her own destiny or that it is chosen for him?

  4. Though Freya declares that her time in Niðergeard was the worst thing she's ever gone through, Daniel fondly recalls it as the best thing that has ever happened to him. Why do you think two people, going through the same experience, have such different perspectives? How did Freya's and Daniel's experiences define each of them?

  5. Swiðgar says to Freya and Daniel, "You have started along a path that you cannot go back on. But there will be more paths to choose from and soon. Perhaps one of those will lead you to the place you seek, perhaps somewhere better." How are Freya and Daniel alike? How are they different? Why do you think they were each chosen for this task, and why were they chosen to do it together?

  6. What parts of Freya's and Daniel's lives do you think were reality, and what parts were deceptions, meant to entrap them?

  7. Ecgbryt declares that, "War is only barbaric when fought by barbarians--dishonorable when fought by those with no honor." Do you agree with his point of view? Why or why not?

  8. Daniel says, "I think I'd rather die doing something than die doing nothing." How does the ideal of being a hero affect Daniel's determination and course of action in the book? Does this ideal affect Freya's perspective?

  9. What role does Elfland play in this tale?

  10. Freya has the opportunity to kill Gád and falters. What prevents her from completing the quest set before her? Why do you think she lies to Daniel about what actually happened?

  11. How does Gád cause Freya to rethink her perspective on the relationship between good and evil? How does Gád’s perspective influence her?

  12. Swiðgar believes that "men and women of any type, of any nation, of any advantage, at any time, will always war with, steal from, and take advantage of each other, no matter what is done to try to help them improve their lives. No matter what the advantages--education, riches, comfort--men will still tend toward evil." He declares that, "It seems that people carry corruption around inside of them wherever they go." Do you agree or disagree with his statements?
