memories ...

today's friday five game from rev gals is a walk down memory lane.  the bonus question of a song to sum up a memory is what really caught my eye, so had to play!  here's what sally asked ~ how would you respond?  your reflections will be enjoyed by more if you're willing to share in the comments (:
This year Tim and I have planted and nurtured a vegetable garden, and I have just spent the morning preparing vegetables and soups for the freezer, our veggie garden is producing like crazy and it is hard to keep up with, that said it'll be worth it for a little taste of summer in the middle of winter :-). That got me thinking of the things I treasure, memories are often more valuable than possessions. How about you, can you share:
*  A treasured memory from childhood?  particularly remembering my father teaching me to ride a bicycle.  not only the laughable memories of that evening, but the resulting gift of freedom.  i was now independent.  able to venture farther afield and was blessed to live in a rural town where that was possible.  out gathering brown-eyed-susan bouquets from roadsides, discovering a wider world in my explorations.  yes, a well treasured memory...
*  A teenage memory?  learning to drive!  yes, another step of freedom and how beneficial not only to the time but my future.  living rurally it was a necessity that's stood me in good stead wherever i've lived.  huge gratitude to my dad for supporting me in providing the car and opps to practice !
*  A young adult memory?   excellent opportunities offered for positions requiring responsibility - stretching me, challenging and allowing the growth needed in different areas.  thinking of the period of time i served as librarian of the church.  purchasing, cataloguing, culling old stock from the shelves, loaning, stocking shelves, 'hiring' help - probably more accurately 'recruiting', marketing, and expanding.  good memories of times that added strength to my confidence and capabilities as a young woman.
*  A memory from this summer?  definitely would be my daughter's wedding!  a gift of relationships, a gift of time, a gift of family, a gift of beauty, a gift of memories ... lovely!

*  A memory you hope to have?   grandbabies??
*  Bonus- a song that sums up one of those memories ?
one that seems to actually fit all of mine would be crosby, stills, nash 'teach your children' ...
You, who are on the road must have a code that you can live by.
And so become yourself because the past is just a good bye.
Teach your children well, their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams, the one they fix, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

And you, of the tender years can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth, they seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well, their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams, the one they fix,the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

*  and what of your memories?  meaningful memory songs?  care to share?
we'd love to listen !
