My Book Beginning?

From THE PROPHETESS :Deborah's Story
by Jill Eileen Smith

"When new gods were chosen,
then war was in the gates.
Deborah, poet, prophetess,
                   and judge in Israel"

Always fascinated with Deborah's role in historic accounts,
I was sure not to miss this new fictional account.
The book beginning sets the background
for what we know of the time in Israel's history.
Now what will I
come to know about Deborah as daughter, wife, and mother, along with public roles as poet,
prophetess, and judge ...

FRIDAY FINDS: PREPARING FOR AUSTEN IN AUGUST 24.7.15

Had a lovely afternoon yesterday with DIL and grandsons including
a leisurely walk to the library.
I brought home a few finds for the upcoming annual Austen in August theme
beginning in 1 week!
[hosted by Adam of Roof Beam Reader for signups if you're joining us]
~
I've begun Alexander McCall Smith's modern re-telling of Emma - one of my #BigBookSummer reads [ click link for more info].
"The summer after university, Emma Woodhouse returns home to the village of Highbury, where she will live with her health-conscious father until she is ready to launch her interior-design business and strike out on her own. In the meantime, she will do what she does best: offer guidance to those less wise in the ways of the world than herself. Happily, this summer brings many new faces to Highbury and into the sphere of Emma's not always perfectly felicitous council: Harriet Smith, a naive teacher's assistant at the ESL school run by the hippie-ish Mrs. Goddard; Frank Churchill, the attractive stepson of Emma's former governess; and, of course, the perfect Jane Fairfax." --publisher

~
New discovery for me, let's see if it lives up to the synopsis...
"In this ingenious new twist on Mansfield Park , the famously meek Fanny Price--whom Jane Austen's own mother called "insipid"--has been utterly transformed; she is now a rich heiress who is spoiled, condescending, and generally hated throughout the county. Mary Crawford, on the other hand, is now as good as Fanny is bad, and suffers great indignities at the hands of her vindictive neighbor. It's only after Fanny is murdered on the grounds of Mansfield Park that Mary comes into her own, teaming-up with a thief-taker from London to solve the crime. Featuring genuine Austen characters--the same characters, and the same episodes, but each with a new twist--MURDER AT MANSFIELD PARK is a brilliantly entertaining novel that offers Jane Austen fans an engaging new heroine and story to read again and again.
Lynn Shepherd, who received a doctorate in English literature from Oxford University, lives in London. She first had the idea of writing "an authentic Austen murder" nearly ten years ago.
~
On request, I can hardly wait for this to arrive...
"Lovett weaves a brilliantly imagined mystery, featuring one of English literature's most popular and beloved authors: Jane Austen. Book lover and Austen enthusiast Sophie Collingwood has recently taken a job at an antiquarian bookshop in London when two different customers request a copy of the same obscure book: the second edition of Little Book of Allegories by Richard Mansfield. Their queries draw Sophie into a mystery that will cast doubt on the true authorship of Pride and Prejudice --and ultimately threaten Sophie's life. In a dual narrative that alternates between Sophie's quest to uncover the truth--while choosing between two suitors--and a young Jane Austen's touching friendship with the aging cleric Richard Mansfield, Lovett weaves a romantic, suspenseful, and utterly compelling novel about love in all its forms and the joys of a life lived in books." -- publisher

Charlie Lovett is a former antiquarian bookseller, an avid book collector, and a member of The Grolier Club, the preeminent club for bibliophiles in North America. He and his wife split their time between Winston-Salem, North Carolina and Kingham, Oxfordshire, in England.
