Aesthetic Concerns - Books
Today is all about book aesthetics!
Colours, fonts, graphics, size and shape, weight,
photos...

1. How often do you judge a book by its cover?
Far too often - more often than not.
*
2. How often are you surprised by what you find?
And far too often I've been
disillusioned. An appealing cover - colours, font, and
photos in particular - that just doesn't line up
with content is disappointing at the least.
Then back cover copy or front inside cover synopsis gets its
turn at impressing me or
a recommendation from a valued reliable source.
Less often it's been the reverse - discovering a great
story with a weak first impression.
But, as with most things, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!
*
3. Do you strategize and make sure every book in your series
has the same cover design (as far as you are able to)
and type?
It's a treat to find a complete matched collection
at a vintage or charity shop, so I'd be sure to snap it up.
But no strategizing unless it's a new publish that
catches me by surprise and gets me dreaming!
I'm usually thrilled with discovering a title I'm
pursuing by a fav author, let alone a series.
*
4. How important is it for the visual art on the outside of the
book to match or coordinate with the literature art on the
inside?
Definitely more pleasing when it does
and might determine a purchase or discard
of the book at the store.

Any thoughts on your own book selecting?
Which aesthetics play a part for you or is any book
a great find as is?
Thanks for taking time to chat in comments!

I'm terribly guilty of judging books by their covers - I don't even pretend not to. Covers are important!! As far as matching my series, the only time I do that is when there's something specific about the covers that I love!
