ARMCHAIR BEA DAY 3: BOOKS & BLOGGING IN REAL LIFE 13.5.16

ARMCHAIR BEA: DAY 3
Beyond the traditional form of the novel, what are your favourite alternative

forms? Do you have any favorite works within these alternate forms?

~

Fav alternate forms for me are audiobooks and kindle on my tablet.
Favourite audiobooks are the Hamish Macbeth mystery series.
Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache, Jessica Dotta's Born of Persuasion.
Donna Leon's Guido Brunetti.and Sibella Giorello's Raleigh Harmon series.
To name a few...  Are you an audiobook fan?
Which books would you name as favourites?

~

How do you think the changing format affects the reading experience?

~

Changing the format allows for increased reading experience and enjoyment.

It's like having a story
read to me and enjoyed just like my children
love having the world of a story opened to them in the reading.

I especially love the scottish and english stories when read by  an authentically
accented narrator that keeps it real and takes me back to times

and places I've enjoyed.  Or a full dramatisation by the BBC cast.

And, not to miss, the added freedom to simultaneously work on

other projects whilst enjoying the story!
The kindle on tablet brings cover colour to life for an added appreciation

and the touch screen for font size increase, change in brightness as needed

~*~

Our secondary topic, Beyond the Blog, focuses on the ways I engage in

talking about books outside of my blog.

How and where do I participate?

~

In fact, I am always talking books!

I'm actively present at my local library, reserving and requesting

new library purchases of authors not yet shelved and books next in series.
Through this frequent presence I've become known

and have now been asked to partner with them in an upcoming

outreach project of installing Little Free Libraries for low income areas

of the city where I live.
~

~

I am super excited for this amazing opportunity

and look forward to beginning this summer reading extension into

the neighbourhoods that will benefit from increased literacy.

~
I also am providing a book sale table tomorrow at a local

community club event.

~

Online, I'm active in quite a number of reading challenges as linked under header
including the goodreads annual challenge - a great way to keep track of my

year's reading - and I'm pretty much

'meticulous in maintaining my goodreads profile' as abea states ;)
I've taken the '50 book pledge' [see sidebar ] finding it a great way to
track my year's reading and progress and it's not limited to only 50 books!

I love to find downloads of ebooks and audios or streaming via hoopla
a free service offered by public libraries with your membership card.
Also, the Overdrive option.
I can be found

Tweeting books on twitter @_eHope

FB  Bloglovin'  Library Thing  Book Depository affiliate for convenient no charge shipping in sidebar
I post to a variety of weekly book blog linkups and I'm

Always into a good readathon and week long reading challenges

like the current UK hosted #bookbuddyathon and #boutofbooks
and the month long #CleanSweepArc reading.

Several Pinterest boards  G+  Networked blogs and Bloglovin' all linked below
or sidebar and GFC at bottom of blog

I have met some fantastic bookish friends via blogging and book talk/ tweeting,
that I 'd never have met otherwise.  I am both glad and grateful!

~

I'm also talking books as member of a local bookstore bookclub meeting once per month.
I would like to begin a
bookclub, but a bit short on time.  Especially if I ever
want to catchup on ARCs and reviews!

~

I'm enjoying reading other bloggers' responses to this topic and look forward to
another day of Armchair BEA .

Thanks for stopping in and taking time to chat on this fun topic!

ARMCHAIR BEA : BOOK AESTHETICS DAY 2 12.5.16

~

DAY 2: ARMCHAIR BEA
~

Aesthetic Concerns - Books

Today is all about book aesthetics!
Colours, fonts, graphics, size and shape, weight,

photos...

~*~

1. How often do you judge a book by its cover?

Far too often - more often than not.
*
2. How often are you surprised by what you find?

And far too often I've been

disillusioned.  An appealing cover - colours, font, and
photos in particular -  that just doesn't line up
with content is disappointing at the least.

Then back cover copy or front inside cover synopsis gets its
turn at impressing me or
a recommendation from a valued reliable source.

Less often it's been the reverse - discovering a great
story with a weak first impression.
But, as with most things, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

*
3. Do you strategize and make sure every book in your series
has the same cover design (as far as you are able to)
and type?

It's a treat to find a complete matched collection
at a vintage or charity shop, so I'd be sure to snap it up.
But no strategizing unless it's a new publish that
catches me by surprise and gets me dreaming!
I'm usually thrilled with discovering a title I'm
pursuing by a fav author, let alone a series.

*
4. How important is it for the visual art on the outside of the
book to match or coordinate with the literature art on the
inside?
Definitely more pleasing when it does
and might determine a purchase or discard
of the book at the store.

*

Any thoughts on your own book selecting?
Which aesthetics play a part for you or is any book
a great find as is?
Thanks for taking time to chat in comments!

Opening Intro Q/A

1.  What is the name you prefer to use?
FHC or Faith Hope and Cherrytea
@_eHope twitter
~

2.  How long have you been a book blogger?
Blogging since 2010 - books for 5 years
~

3.  Have you participated in ABEA before?
Almost annually
~

Next up for Introductions?

My selection of  A's for the offered Q options:

2.  What is your favourite genre and why?

Historical fiction runs a tight race with mystery for my reading go to. If they're combined it's a sure win!  Set in England?  Perfection. Why?  They challenge my mind to notice and decipher details relevant to thestory and its conclusion or solution as may be.  Then I grab a different genrethat's light reading to have a laugh and I'm set for another mystery!

~*~

3.  If you could recommend one other book blogger,
who would it be and why?

Kathryn at The Book Date.  A NZ based book blog where Kathryn shareshospitality each week via It's Monday - What Are You Reading? meme. She visits each of the participants.  She also hosts interesting annual challenges and regularly interacts with her fellow readers.  Kathryn has a similar taste in books and creates a sense of being connected.

~*~
4.  Which day of ABEA are you looking forward to the most?

Friday.  Beyond the Books.  Beyond the Blog. Both are about alternatives to the norm.

In books, how do I think the change of format affects the reading experience?

Beyond the blog?  Ways I engage in talking about books outside of my blog.

~*~
5.  If you could create a playlist that reflects your bookshelf, what would be the first song you choose?
~

~*~
6.  How do you arrange your bookshelves?
Is there a rhyme or reason?
Or not at all? (#ABEAShelfie)

~

I like having all books of an author together on a shelf and part of a larger group, such as all JAFF together, with all books by an author gathered together -thus, all Jane Austen's are together and included in ALL the JAFF books I own. Or, all Agatha's together in the mysteries. I also like to have my nonfic as a group with each particular author's books together
within that larger group.

~*~

DAY 1 TOPIC:  DIVERSITY

in books and the publishing industry

Whose voices do we see?

Whose voices do we need more of?

Where do we find representation lacking and what can we as bloggers do to address that?

What about negative or stereotypical representation?

I see a huge divide between age group representation.  Possibly a result of
writer age plus publishers' target marketing investment?
Definitely a proportionately larger number of books written to the 20 - 30

somethings than middle age readers.
I'm not sure what bloggers can do to change that?  Perhaps to  read, review

and request books of publishers that have main characters in that group?
To speak up with that interest?  Specifically look for those novels to read?
To open the conversation on our blogs?
~
And, please, not just fluffy elderly ladies solving cozy mysteries.
There is a lot to be said for wise women taking the lead.
Using their life experience and skills gained to impact their world,

relationships, business,  and the readers enjoying the novels.
~
I also appreciate the several books I've noticed that don't offer the
stereotypical misrepresentations of clergy.  More would be appreciated.
Perhaps editors could be more aware to wield influence in the writing process?

~
How would you answer today's Q/A on diversity?
I'd love to hear your thoughts in comments.
Thanks for being part of this week's Armchair BEA conversation!
